Reviewed in 1996 C. J. S. PURDY HIS LIFE, HIS GAMES and HIS WRITINGS Edited by J. Hammond and R. Jamieson What marks a chess genius? The answers to that question and much more you will find in this book. Cecil J.S. Purdy was the 1st Correspondence Chess World Champion, an over the board IM, and a superb writer. This 362 page book is divided into three sections. Cecil Purdy's life, his writings, and his games. Purdy also put Australia on the map in the chess sense.
When I read a book, especially about correspondence chess, I want more than just reams of analysis. I want to learn about the author, learn what he has to teach, and be entertained. This one comes through on all three counts. Purdy's biography is written in fine style by his wife, Anne (who else could do it better?). Examples of his chess writings are given and are worth their weight in gold. Here was a player who loved the game, sold books, supplies and magazines as a profession, and reached the top of the sport with his superb play.
Whether you love chess, correspondence chess, or good writing, you will not be disappointed by this book. It adds significantly to chess history and literature. It is a labor of love, and as such, should be bought by every serious correspondence chess player.
