CORRESPONDENCE CHESS
by Hanon W. Russell

This 186 page book, published in 1980, was the first in the literature to devote itself exclusively to correspondence chess (excepting tournament books, of course). That the author is a noted chess historian and translator of Russian works is immediately noticeable. Hanon Russell uses a systematic approach, from a historical perspective, to trace the origins of correspondence chess, from its beginnings, to the date of publication. There are chapters on the early city matches, the Steinitz-Chigorin Match, the beginnings of the ICCF, the World Championship Series (I-VIII), correspondence chess in Russia, and over the board (crossboard) GMs who played CC. The rest of the book is devoted to practical tips on how to enjoy playing correspondence chess.

I have seen reviews of this book which criticize the grammar and writing style. Easy enough to do, but harder to justify in light of the obvious worth of this book to CC literature. The practical tips section might have been expanded, more anecdotes could have been given concerning what it is really like to play serious CC, but these are all minor points which do not in any way detract from its readability or value.

The author lays the groundwork for the history of correspondence chess. This is both entertaining and necessary information, should a player want to become involved with serious CC. I can, without hesitation, give it a solid buy now recommendation.

This book is out of print and available only at used chess book dealers. Get it if you can!
