* 2008 Canadian East vs. West Provincial
Team Championship! *
The CCCA has decided to resurrect this event which was part of the CCCA's tournament schedule many years ago. A team from the eastern provinces:
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, New foundland plus Québec will play against a team from the western provinces: British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, plus Ontario.
Participation on the two teams is open to all, with seeding order according to rating. Each board will play two games. There is no entry fee. This will be an ICCF server hosted event, but we will try to accommodate those who wish to play by post or email too, if possible. Foreign players are welcome to join as well. Foreign entries will be split amongst the teams to be as competitive as possible. The deadline for entries is May 15, with a start date June 1 or thereabouts. Joe Deidun, Jr. will act as team captain for the West team, while Ralph P. Marconi will act as team captain for the East team. If you are interested in playing in this event then send your entries to either Joe or Ralph.

*** CANADA LEADS PATT V! ***
The PATT (Pacific/Area Team Tournament) is the official team event in the NAPZ.
PATT V started on 15 September 2006 and is nearing completion. The defending Champion, Canada, has recently taken over the lead with 38 points with 6 games remaining. The combined team of Australia/New Zealand has fallen back to second place with 37 points with 4 games remaining, after having lead most of the way. And the USA is in 3rd place with 35.5 points with 4 games remaining. Canada needs only 3.5 points out of 6 to clinch first place and we are in a very good position to do so!

Robert J. Fischer (1943-2008)
On Friday, 18 January, former World Chess champion Robert J. Fischer died of kidney failure in his adoptive country of Iceland. He was 64. Some have observerd the strange coincidence that a chess baord has 64 squares. He defeated GM Boris Spassky in 1972 to become the first American World Champion in more than 100 years. He remained world Champion for only 3 years, refusing to play GM Anatoly Karpov under the existing match rules. In 1992 he played a rematch with Boris Spassky
in the fomer Yugoslavia. Off the board in his later years he held some very controversial views, but he will always be remembered for his brilliant style of play and one of the greatest chess players of all time.

Ivar (Ole) Dranieks Passes Away
In December (2007) I was informed that long time member, Ivar ( Ole ) Dravnieks had passed
away. Ole was a CCCA Life member and shared the 1955 Canadian
Championship ( K11 ) with A. Lidacis. Regretably I have no further
information to give you. I am sure he had many chess friends in CCCA
and he will be missed and remembered. --- Manny Migicovsky

For details on the event and how to enter click on: Veterans World Cup 2008 PDF . Please note that entry to this event is through the National Federations. So entry fees should be sent to me. --- Ralph P. Marconi, CCCA International Events Secretary
Additional information from Manny Migicovsky below:
......Briefly the details are that you must be 60 years or over
by April 11th. It will be played on the ICCF web server and each
section will be 11-13 players. There will probably be more than one
round depending on number of entries. The playing fee is 20 Swiss
Francs but for you the price is $20.00 Canadian dollars. You must send
in your entry with payment to Ralph Marconi (check or money made out to CCCA, RPM)or to me but preferably
to Ralph unless you are combining this entry with other CCCA
business. Deadline for entry is February 28 to the TD so make sure
you send it to Ralph or me by February 14th or you may not be in time
to play. If you wish to pay via a credit card then advise me and I
will send you an invoice from PayPal. In that case the playing fee
will be $22.00 not $20.00 to cover the PayPal fees.
